If you press any of the top four buttons, they will still be depressed. If you then press a different button, the first button pops up, and the new button remains pressed. A truly neat set of plates that act like cups in a lock makes this feature possible, and also controls which heating elements are triggered.

Inside the thermostat switch
Inside the switch there is a group of four contacts. Depending on which button is pressed, the panels open or close different groups of contacts. The following set of photos shows how pushing buttons causes panels to line up in different ways, and raises or lowers the bars that make up the contacts.
